In an effort to journey together as a spiritual community and body through the current Covid 19 pandemic, the elders and staff will be bringing a daily word of encouragement (Monday through Friday) to help keep us all focused on Christ during this time. This is entry number 4 of those entries.

The Power of Praise

Exalting God and Directing our Hearts

The Covid-19 virus has drastically changed our lives. In these short 2 weeks, we’ve seen closures and cancellations. Our everyday vocabulary now includes the words self-quarantine and social distancing. Just as public health guidelines change by the hour, I find my own emotions can change by the hour. I go through times of hope and peace to times of fear and anxiety. In my head, I know that I need to anchor myself on the promises of God’s word, but too often in the midst of headlines and news, it is hard to internalize God’s truth into my heart.  Maybe you can relate.

One thing that can calm my heart in the midst of anxiety is God’s gift of music. Just yesterday, Susan told me about a song she heard on youtube. I listened to it and it was God’s grace to me in that moment. The song and lyrics anchored my thoughts and heart.

Martin Luther believed that music was second only to the Scripture in its ability to anchor our thoughts and elevate the soul. Not only was Luther a great theologian, he was also a hymn writer. When the Black Plague spread through Europe, he chose to stay and minister to the people who were suffering. And it was in the midst of that crisis, Luther wrote “A Mighty Fortress is our God” based on Psalm 46.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

Our helper He, amid the flood or mortal ills prevailing

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.

Hearing this song and knowing the setting in which it was written, strengthens our heart, comforts our soul and encourages us on mission. Even though this world around us seems so unstable, even though mortal ills seem to prevail, He is our fortress, our strong tower, our helper and we need not fear for God is with us! This is a hymn that has ministered to thousands throughout the years. When anchored to God’s timeless truth, hymns and praise music has the ability to elevate our souls.

Now more than ever, we need to rest in the knowledge of God’s word and surround ourselves with His truths through praise music. Let this music fill your homes and airpods, that your soul will be filled and elevated through all seasons life.

I updated our Lifesong spotify playlist to include songs that are filled with biblical truth that anchor our wandering hearts to His!

Blessings,
