There is no doubt that we are living in very dark days. First the Covid pandemic with over 100,000 dead. Then economic meltdown with trillions added to our national debt and many millions unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. Then a violent murder which was undoubtedly an act of racism. Then a judge’s decision which failed to uphold justice. Then nationwide looting and opportunism which causes further pain to the suffering innocent store owners. Our nation and world are filled with darkness. There is no doubt that we are deeply entrenched in a spiritual battle in which the demons and sinful man are on the attack against humanity and the church. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight for our world and more than a few are looking intently for signs of the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Although the media puts the acts of evil and works of darkness in our face again and again, we should not think that there is only darkness out there. God’s Word says that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5). Light is always more powerful than darkness. It is the perfect illustration of the power of Christ compared to the powers of evil. However, it is also the perfect illustration of the power of the Holy Spirit as He works through us, His church. Scripture is clear that the dark gates of hell will never prevail against the church no matter how hard it tries. (Matthew 16:18)

The fascinating thing about this truth is that gates do not attack. Gates always defend. Although it may seem like Satan and the demons are succeeding in destroying humanity and even the church, the truth is that Christ’s church will prevail! How can this possibly be when the only thing we hear from the media is that the darkness is prevailing?

While the media may never show it, the light is actually pushing out the darkness. The forces of evil can only lash out while being uncoupled and dismantled. Although it is very subtle and unseen, we need to remember that the kingdom of Light is like yeast powerfully working through dough. It is invisible to the naked eye but permeates throughout the whole lump of dough. Even though the media will not report it, millions of anxious and fearful people are giving their lives to Christ throughout the world. They are joining with the church to give Christ the love and worship that He deserves. In contrast to the rampant hatred and injustice, Christians are shining as bright stars in the night as we produce the Holy Spirit’s fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to God’s great glory!
