Back when I was a kid, it seemed like everyone had a hamster. If you had a hamster, you also had to get a hamster wheel. They looked so cute running the wheel. Yet it was also sad...running all day, working hard...going nowhere.
This week’s reading through Ecclesiastes reminds me that our lives could be like that. We seek the promotion, we strive for that grade, we want that relationship, we hunger for more. Our little rodent race. Work hard...spin that wheel, but where does it get us when we work only for personal gain?
Don’t get me wrong, hard work is important. But when we do it for ourselves it is fleeting and doesn’t mean much in the end. On the other hand, we can work in obedience to God, to work with all our heart as working for the Lord (Col 3:23), to be pointing to Him in our places of work or study or in our relationships, and giving Him the glory. What a privilege it is to work and shine the light, pointing others to God!
