Children are truly gifts from the Lord! They not only bless us but also provide us with a God-given opportunity and responsibility to raise them up in the ways of the Lord. As stewards of these precious gifts, you as parents are responsible to love your children by praying for them (Matt. 19:13; Eph. 6:18), teaching them the ways of God (Deut. 6:4-7; Ps. 78:1-8), shepherding their hearts, (Luke 6:45; Prov. 22:6) and disciplining them when necessary (Proverbs 13:24; 29:17).

In a child dedication, you are declaring a desire for God to be active in your child’s life. You are entrusting your child into God’s sovereign hands and asking for His favor to be upon him or her. Child dedications are also an occasion for you to submit your personal dreams for your children unto God’s desires for them. As a Christian parent, you are making a commitment to raising your children in ways that are pleasing to the Lord. Child dedications are usually conducted in the presence and support of the entire church community for two reasons: (1) so the church family can commit to partnering with you in raising your child in the Lord and (2) so the church family can encourage and equip you as godly parents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dedication make my child a Christian?

Child dedications do not make your child a Christian. Eternal salvation is a gift from God that is only applied through faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8-9). By God’s grace, your child will make that personal decision when he or she is old enough to understand the gospel, repent of sin and trust Jesus as Savior.

Why doesn’t Lifesong baptize children?

Baptism is a public confession of faith in Jesus Christ. When your child submits his or her life to Christ as Savior and Lord, then he or she may choose to publicly declare that through the waters of baptism (Rom. 6:3-5; Col. 2:11-15).

Is there a preferable age for children to be dedicated?

There is not a specific minimum or maximum age for a child to be dedicated but we believe “the sooner, the better!”

Life Passage

The Bible is God’s inspired Word containing truth for eternal salvation and wisdom for godly living. As part of the dedication process, we would like you to select a passage of Scripture to be your child’s “life passage.” This passage will be a special encouragement of truth for your child throughout his or her life. If you are not sure where to begin here are a few suggestions:

  1. Pray and ask God to guide you as parents
  2. Start with OT wisdom literature (Psalms or Proverbs) or a NT epistle (Ephesians; Colossians, etc.). These are merely suggestions but all of God’s Word is appropriate and applicable.
  3. Choose something that you would like to consistently pray for your child throughout his or her life.
  4. Ask for help. Ask other parents in the church, a pastor, or Christian family members
